Elementary Students Learn to Make Healthy Choices

Clay County school students learn "The Great Pyramid Adventure."

“I am eating yogurt instead of candy after school.” “I didn’t know my cereal had so much sugar in it. I think I’m going to make a change.” “I’m going to drink more water and less soda.” “I’m not going to skip breakfast anymore!” These statements were made by Clay County elementary school students after “Nutrition Week” at their schools.

During September and October, over 1500 students, grades K–6, in Piggott, Rector, and Corning elementary schools learned that making healthy eating choices is fun. They learned through the Organ Wise Guys, toy characters that represent human body organs. Five daily lessons included good nutrition concepts such as drinking more water instead of soda, getting enough servings of calcium foods to build strong bones, eating a healthy breakfast, and practicing portion control. Banners, bulletin-board displays, and videos were used to emphasize the nutrition lessons and to make the learning fun.

Culminating Nutrition Week, students in grades K–3 made healthy snacks in their classrooms. Students in grades 4–6 participated in “The Great Pyramid Adventure,” an interactive walk-through featuring seven exhibit stations. High school students presented the nutrition information. Students filled in a question from each exhibit on their passport to adventure. A prize was awarded to each classroom by drawing from the completed passports. Before exiting “The Great Pyramid Adventure,” students made their own healthy snacks.

Impacts

Clay County elementary students are better informed about how to make healthy eating choices after participating in Nutrition Week at their schools.

University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service employees trained 94 Clay County elementary school teachers in summer in-service sessions.

During Nutrition Week at county schools, 335 nutrition lessons were taught to over 1500 students. Parents also received information through daily nutrition newsletters brought home by their students.
