County Impact Statements - Clark County
After the two ice storms we had this past winter, a large number of private
land owners were worried about the timber damage they incurred. A private owned
timber company was being contacted about harvesting the damaged timber by many
of these land owners. As more and more calls were received, the company called
the Extension Service here in Clark County to help do an educational program.
The owners of the timber company is a strong supporter of Extension and one of
them is involved in the LeadAR program.
The county agent contacted Dr. Frank Roth, University of Arkansas Cooperative
Extension Service forestry specialist, to conduct a meeting in the county to
help answer the questions land owners had about management of their timber after
the ice storm. A meeting was planned and conducted in the county covering such
topics as Taxes, Pruning Your Trees After an Ice Storm, and Harvesting Your
Timber After an Ice Storm.
The meeting had fifty-three participants who were private land owners, and
eight people that were industry or government employees. A post-test was given
to the attendees and 98% of those surveyed reported that the meeting changed
their management practices. They reported having a better understanding of taxes
and tax breaks they can check into, as well.
