Carroll County 4-H Members Shine

2007 Senior 4-H Champion

Shannon is a member of North Polo Pioneers 4-H Club in Berryville. Her main project is raising goats. Her other interests include horses, music, dogs and cats. She joined 4-H to be with her friends and to find out more about it.

A goal of Shannon is to, by age 18, have 41 full-blood Boer does and to be making enough money to put her through college. She started out with 3 pigmy goats, and the family now has 142 goats, many of which are full-blood Boers.

Shannon and her mom attended the National Meat Goat Association’s Judging School in San Antonio, Texas for three days learning what good conformation of a meat goat is supposed to look like.

They implemented rotational grazing for their herd and have saved time and money as a result. Shannon has tried and succeeded in learning proper care and maintenance and is now the primary caretaker of the family’s goat herd.

She has supervised boys from the nearby Boy’s Ranch hired to do farm chores. She writes down all feeding chores, animal locations, and how to do about everything. In order to assure the herd is disease-free, Shannon pulls blood and has done so over 300 times. Her mom says she can pull blood as good as the vet can.

2007 Junior 4-H Champion

Adam is an active member of the Dry Fork/Metalton 4-H Club where he serves as Vice-President. Adam enjoys helping the younger members of his 4-H club with their fair projects. He will be in eighth grade in the fall of 2007. He plays basketball on his school’s team, is active in his church’s youth group and maintains a 4.0 grade level.

Adam has been raising and showing animals at the county level for 9 years. He has competed in numerous jackpots and has competed at district and state levels. This year, he is showing a Hereford heifer and a Hereford bull, both raised on his family’s farm in south Carroll County. His bull has won several Breed Champion Awards.

Adam enjoys hunting, particularly deer, turkey and squirrels. He participates in the Carroll County 4-H Shooting Sports Club. He will compete at the state level for the second time in June.
