Carroll County Master Gardeners
Who are the Master Gardeners? There are 29 current, active Carroll County Master Gardeners. They are volunteers: people like you from all walks of life who have an interest in gardening, a willingness to learn, and a desire to help others solve their gardening problems. Their mission is to increase the availability of horticultural information and improve quality of life with horticultural projects. The Master Gardener Training Program first started in Carroll County in 1996. Since then, 138 students have been trained and thousands of volunteer hours have been reported. The 2007 Master Gardener Training involved 15 new participants and classroom instruction included topics such as Soil Sampling; Fertilizer: Organic & Commercial; Water Quality; Wildflowers, Perennials, & Water Gardens; Landscape Design; Daylilies; Perennials; Japanese Maples; Vegetables; Lawn Grass & Weed Control; Irrigation Equipment; Reading Soil Test Results; Roses; and a class test and evaluation. Master Gardeners receive 40 hours of basic horticulture training from the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service faculty, and in return, they are required to volunteer 40 hours of their time and skills to assist the county Cooperative Extension Service with various beautification and educational projects. The title Master Gardener is used by persons who have successfully completed the Arkansas Master Gardener Program and the 40 hours of volunteer work. The title is earned on an annual basis and must continue to be renewed in following years by completing 20 hours of volunteer work and 20 hours of additional education. The designation of Master Gardener becomes void when you cease active participation.
Master Gardener “sanctioned projects” are designed, installed, and maintained by the Master Gardener Volunteers of Carroll County. These projects are long-term commitments of the Carroll County Master Gardeners and are in various stages of development, completion, and ongoing maintenance. New projects must go through an evaluation process, be approved by the Extension Agent, and subjected to a vote of the membership. Carroll County Master Gardener Sanctioned Projects include or have included: Berryville K-3 Elementary, Berryville Library, Carroll County Fairgrounds, Carroll Regional Medical Center, Carroll County Fair–Agronomy/Floriculture/Horticulture Departments, County Fair Sale Booth, County Fair Educational Booth, Cora’s Cabin in Eureka Springs, County Extension Office, Green Forest Square, Newsletter, Public Education Classes, Welcome to Green Forest Signs, Wildflower Project, and Yard of the Month. The Master Gardener program is open to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, marital or veteran status, or any other legally protected status.
