Calhoun Gets FSNE Program
Food Stamp Nutrition Education

The Food Stamp Nutrition Education (FSNE) program is a partnership between the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service and the Department of Health and Human Services. The FSNE program provides nutritional education to food-stamp-eligible individuals. The goal of the program is to provide educational programs that improve the likelihood that food-stamp-eligible individuals will make healthy food choices within a limited budget, and choose active livestyles consistent with the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans and USDA food guideance system.

Three Food Stamp Nutrition Education sessions were held at the Department of Human and Health Services. Two of the workshops were held at the Food Stamp Office and the other was held at the Health Department. Food stamp recipients were given a short lesson, using MyPyramid. Many participants expressed a desire to learn more about nutrition, and several felt that they were better equipped to make informed decisions on food that promotes good health while living on a limited income. One participant stated that she wanted to lose weight and hoped that the information she was given would help her in a weight-loss plan.

During one monthly session, while exchanging the FSNE exhibit, the receptionist at the Health Department mentioned that they were happy to have the Fight Back display because it was directly related to their monthly theme.
