County Impact Statements - Boone County
Boone County Youth Leadership Program
The goals of the Boone County Youth Leadership Program are to build or
strengthen leadership skills, build self-esteem, and provide an opportunity and
encourage participants to complete community service projects. Over 120 Boone
County high school juniors have participated in the program since it began five
years ago.
The program gives youth the opportunity to learn about goal setting,
leadership styles, communication, civic responsibility, decision making, and
community service. Participants take part in monthly training sessions that are
conducted September through April. Programs include: Personality Presentation,
Leadership and Teamwork, Setting Goals and Decision Making, Career Awareness and
Job Interviews, Civic Responsibility and Community Awareness and "Welcome to the
Real World" life decisions program. Youth also participate in the 4-H EXCEL
Ropes Course and tour our state capitol.
The Youth Leadership Program is coordinated by the Chamber of Commerce and
the Boone County Extension Service. The program is supported by donations from
the adult leadership class, area businesses, civic groups, and individuals.
Community service projects are a very important part of the program. Service
projects that have been conducted by previous classes are: coat drive for the
Sanctuary, campus beautification, blood drives at local high schools, food
drives, trash pickup, collection of pet supplies for the human society, and a
"buddy" system for elementary students was organized.
