Extension Homemakers: Improve Quality of Life
"To empower individuals and families to improve their quality of living
through continuing education, leadership development and community service"
remains the mission of the Benton County Extension Homemakers clubs and council.
This program, better known to those involved, as EHC, is a part of the Family
and Consumer Sciences area of work within the Cooperative Extension Service.
Education: Members are given the opportunity to learn what can help
them individually and for their families in areas such as: family resource
management; nutrition, health and wellness; family and human development;
cultural arts, textiles and clothing and home environment.
Leadership: Members develop leadership skills by participating in a
wide variety of club, county, district and state activities. They are officers,
program leaders, committee chairmen and involved members. EHC prides itself in
the area of leader training, with club leaders attending monthly subject matter
lessons, then extending the information to members back in their local clubs and
communities.
Community Service: Members help identify and plan community and
county-wide projects that will benefit local individuals and families, whether
it’s a health fair, kid’s korner, service to children’s shelters or aid to the
elderly.
"Being an Extension Homemaker Club member has actually helped me raise my
family. We learned by doing and shared what we learned with others." - Current
EHC member

EHC members Bernie Poczekaj and Clara Monson study medication
labels during program on "Saving Money at the Pharmacy".

Impacts
- Benton County boasts 17 clubs with 342 members.
- 300 plus members are taught each month how to improve their quality of
life.
- In return for knowledge gained, 11,000 volunteer hours are given
annually to assist others throughout the county.
- Some $7,000 is provided each year for community service projects,
college scholarships, camps and educational programs.
- Several thousand individuals and families learn many helpful tips while
viewing educational exhibits at the county fair. EHC members are responsible
for sharing what they have already learned, and this is one of the many
avenues of teaching others.
