Individuals Discover Keys to a Healthier Lifestyle
Overweight has been identified as a contributing factor
in many health related problems in Arkansas. Choosing a healthier diet
and increasing physical activity can be effective ways to reduce weight
and improve overall health.
The Family & Consumer Sciences Agent conducted a weight
control program, Reshape Yourself, in DeWitt and Stuttgart with 76
participants in the past two years. Members met weekly for 15 sessions
and learned to make healthier food choices and the benefits of regular
exercise.
Those completing the course lost an average of 10.2
pounds and walked an average of 5.7 miles per week and reported an
improvement in blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure. The most
recent participants lost a combined weight of 240 pounds and walked a
total of 1777 miles. Members unable to walk increased physical activity
by swimming, yard work and bicycling. One group lost a total of 131
pounds and remarked, “We lost a whole person!”
Members continue to come to the County Extension Office
to “weigh-in”. Plans are to continue the program.

Cholesterol & Glucose screenings were taken to monitor the
participants’ overall health.
