Dr. Andrew Goodwin Receives the prestigious Joseph P. McCraren Award

The National Aquaculture Association (NAA) recognized Dr. Andrew Goodwin of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) Aquaculture/Fisheries Center with the Joseph P. McCraren Award at the Aquaculture 2007 meeting in San Antonio, Texas. During the presentation, Dr. Randy McMillian, NAA President, noted “His efforts have helped to protect aquaculture producers from the disease while working to keep the regulations realistic and minimize the burden on fish farmers.”

The award was presented at the plenary session attended by approximately 4,000 people. It is the highest award presented by the aquaculture community. The McCraren Award was established after the death of Joe McCraren, NAA’s first Executive Director. Mr. McCraren was a well-known and admired former employee of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service who worked tirelessly to establish NAA.

Dr. Goodwin is Professor and Associate Director of the UAPB Aquaculture/Fisheries Center where he heads the fish disease diagnostic services. He has worked incessantly over the past year with USDA-APHIS and NAA throughout the outbreak of VHS in the Great Lakes and following the emergency order issued by APHIS to attempt to contain this disease.

Originally from Ohio, Dr. Goodwin did his graduate work at Auburn University followed by postdoctoral work at Cornell University until 1996 when he moved to Arkansas to join the UAPB Aquaculture/Fisheries Center. He is a popular instructor and has numerous scientific and extension publications and grants to his credit. Dr. Goodwin has received previous awards from the Catfish Farmers of Arkansas, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and Best Paper of the Year Award from the Journal of Aquatic Animal Health.
